Collins Square by Walker in Melbourne, is one of their flagship urban transformations and the largest commercial precinct in the southern hemisphere. Walker has a strong focus on connecting sustainable spaces ensuring Collins Square is home many prestigious tenants who enjoy working in “a city within a city”. Walker turned to Gurru when they needed to enhance waste data accuracy and improve their environmental performance.

The Challenge

Before collaborating with Gurru, Walker Corporation had ongoing discrepancies between external (supplier) and onsite reporting, leading to difficulties identifying areas for improvement and measuring their progress towards sustainability and ESG targets.

The Solution

Gurru performed a forensic and comprehensive audit of Walker Corp’s waste processes, systems, and personnel. This all-encompassing review focussed on assessing tenant, cleaner and waste suppliers’ behaviour; the software and manual processes used; as well as both supplier and internal data, to ensure a full picture was achieved.

After the installation of Bintracker scales and software, this comprehensive waste intelligence platform was able to provide accurate data and insights on the performance of each building, sector, floor and tenant. Using this in-depth analysis, along with the audit insights, detailed and data-driven reports were provided and discussed at monthly stakeholder reviews. A targeted improvement program was established that included using the correct waste bins, incorporating organics bins in the commercial kitchens and ongoing education.

The Outcome

With greater clarity and control over their waste management processes, Walker Corporation improved waste visibility, gained accurate and aligned data, identified barriers and bottlenecks and created a clear plan of action for operational improvements. Significant improvements have been made in several areas within the precinct. Their sustainability improvements have strengthened their reputation as an environmentally conscious organisation, reduced costs and improved tenant satisfaction.
