We Just Captured Our First Real-World Calibre Collection, and It Confirms the System Works

On 28 July at 5:43am, Calibre recorded its first successful real-world data capture during a scheduled collection at a regional NSW Government workplace in Bathurst, owned and managed by Property and Development NSW’s (PDNSW). As the trial bin was tipped by a Cleanaway collection truck, it automatically unlocked, logged the date, time and weight. 26.76kg. No manual entry. No estimate.
The trial is supporting PDNSW in reaching its Net Zero emissions target, by helping improve its NABERS Waste rating. While PDNSW’s city offices use specialised weighing systems to track waste data, Bathurst has been trialling the more cost-effective Gurru Calibre system to improve waste monitoring and data collection and provide the evidence needed to support a higher NABERS rating.
It’s a small moment with a big meaning: Calibre has now proven itself on a real site, with a real collection.
Why this matters
Regional sites have historically been harder places to get detailed, real-time waste data. PDNSW wanted accurate and granular data for exactly this kind of site, which is why Bathurst was chosen for this trial.
What We Set Out to Prove, and Delivered
Going into this trial, we made a couple of specific commitments:
- capture accurate external (building-level) waste weight, and
- keep the bin secure so only authorised people could access it.
This first collection confirms both. First, the data captured was precisely 26.76kg – that level of granularity is crucial to the client. Second, only authorised users (cleaners) can unlock bins via the app. Third, when it comes collection, it automatically unlocks, recording the exact date, time, and weight the moment it’s tipped. The client ends up with full clarity on when the bin was accessed and how much waste was actually in it at collection.
Native Integration into Bintracker
If you’re already using Bintracker, Calibre works natively within the existing app under the same logins, so there is no need to download another app. Data collected via Calibre bins flows straight into Bintracker platform in near real-time, zero added workload.
Fast, Easy, and Built for the People Using It
Getting this right meant more than good hardware. It meant the people using it daily could pick it up without friction. The cleaning team for the office space, contracted by PDNSW, learned it in one quick walkthrough: unlock with the app, drop the waste in, lock it again. No special equipment, no complicated steps. Collection is even simpler: no app for the driver, the bin opens automatically as it’s tipped and emptied.
That ease-of-use matters. The whole point of Calibre is that it should fit into an existing routine, not disrupt it.
What's Next
Every rollout starts with one data point. This is ours. We’ll be adding more bins to the NSW Government workplace site in Bathurst over the next couple of weeks, building toward a consistent, ongoing collection record. For now, this is the first entry, and it’s a strong one.
